A System of State-Based Regulations Define the Industry

What’s somewhat unique about the US is that regulations are state based. That not only means that betting is legal in some states and not others, but it also means rules can vary from region to region. Therefore, when you look at the top-rated US sportsbooks, it’s important to consider what’s available and where. The leading review sites, such as SBO, will note the differences between states and, moreover, outline what is available in each region. This is important because someone in Virginia might not be able to access the same sportsbook as someone in Michigan.

The interesting thing to monitor in the coming years will be the development of liquidity sharing pacts and cross-state agreements. As it stands, New Jersey, Delaware, and Nevada have an agreement that allows licensed poker operators with sites in each state to merge their player pools. For example, WSOP.com/888poker lets customers in New Jersey … Read the rest

Rich nations under fire for funding ‘bridge fuel’ gas overseas

BARCELONA — Pressure on wealthy governments to stop financing polluting coal projects in developing nations is getting results, with more countries expected to announce this week and in coming months that they will no longer provide money for coal.

But the battle is far from won — and is now shifting to include oil and gas finance, climate change campaigners say.

Britain has led the way among major donors, saying it would provide no new government financing for fossil fuel projects overseas from this month, with “very limited” exceptions.

The United States is also preparing to announce restrictions, possibly at the Leaders Summit on Climate organized by US President Joseph R. Biden, Jr., on Thursday and Friday.

South Korea, Japan, and Canada could soon join them, and a handful of European nations, in pledging to phase out overseas aid for coal, climate finance experts said ahead of Mr. Biden’s virtual Read the rest

Chauvin convicted of murdering George Floyd in landmark US racial justice case

MINNEAPOLIS — Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted on Tuesday of murdering George Floyd, a milestone in the fraught racial history of the United States and a rebuke of law enforcement’s treatment of Black Americans.

A 12-member jury found Chauvin, 45, guilty of all three charges of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and manslaughter after considering three weeks of testimony from 45 witnesses, including bystanders, police officials, and medical experts. Deliberations began on Monday and lasted just over 10 hours.

In a confrontation captured on video, Chauvin, a white veteran of the police force, pushed his knee into the neck of Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man in handcuffs, for more than nine minutes on May 25, 2020. The jurors remained still and quiet as the Read the rest

Betting on bamboo: Indonesian villages struggle to source safe, green power

SALIGUMA – Cutting through the glassy water of a mangrove-fringed inlet on the east coast of Indonesia’s Siberut island, Mateus Sabojiat and Anjelina Sadodolu arrived home by canoe to Saliguma village.

Back in their house, Sadodolu lit a wood fire to boil water before her husband left for work at the local government office.

“The electric power is on only when it is time to sleep,” said Sadodolu.

The couple in their forties, who have six children, live just a few hundred metres from Indonesia’s first power plant designed to be fuelled by bamboo, one of three such facilities built to bring electricity to isolated villages in Siberut.

But almost three years after construction was completed, the Saliguma biomass power plant supplies electricity to some of the village’s 3,780 residents only between 6pm and midnight – and is currently not using bamboo as originally intended.

DoH says COVID fatality rate in capital at 1.5%, not 5.36%

The Department of Health (DoH) on Friday said the case fatality rate in Metro Manila is almost 1.5% during the past two weeks, lower than the 5.36% reported by the OCTA Research Team on Wednesday.

Health Undersecretary Rosario S. Vergeire, in a virtual briefing, said, “As of April 15, our case fatality rate in NCR (National Capital Region) is 1.46%. We compute the case fatality rate based on the number of deaths from this specific disease, which is the COVID-19, over the number of confirmed cases.”

OCTA said the 5.36% fatality rate from March 28 to April 13 was almost thrice the 1.82% recorded from March 1 to 27. It said this could be attributed to the “overwhelmed” healthcare system and the more transmissible coronavirus variants infecting patients.

The Health department on Friday reported an additional 10,726 cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), bringing the total to 914,971.
