Are Relationships Essential? How To Develop Strong Business Relationships Post-Pandemic

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a celebrity matchmaker and dating expert would tell you that relationships are essential for business success. After 10 years working with some of the biggest names in Hollywood and in the business world, I genuinely cannot think of one successful person who claims they did it all on their own. The quote “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know” is a trope, but it’s a reality.

The beauty about relationships is that we have control. And until this year, we have never had more access to or more of a capability to reach people who can be supportive and game changers in our careers and businesses. Success in business is just like success in dating. Your success has everything to do with you. Your product, idea or business could be genius, but if you don’t know how to deal with people, you won’t be successful.

Remember that appearance matters.

When it comes to dating apps and online dating profiles, photos are 90% of a profile. Text is 10%. When you are building relationships for your business, you need to first make sure that your business looks exceptional online.

Your online presence is everything, especially post-pandemic. Your website needs to be professional and easy to navigate, your Instagram must be loaded with captivating posts and, essentially, you need to look like you have it together. Figure out which social media medium you like the best and fits your demo, and then commit to two posts a week at the minimum.

Connect your brand to you personally.

Use your personal account as a “PS” to your business. Focus on your personal journey on social media and make people want to be a part of it. Live your best life, express yourself and share your journey. Although the “influencer” route may seem a bit self-involved, people are interested in people, not products. People never want to feel like you are selling them something. It is important to remember that you need to create value for them.

Create, engage and affirm.

The secret is ultimately about creating captivating content. Get in front of the camera. Look your best, put your camera phone on portrait mode or get professional photos done with a few different looks. Photograph elements of your life (working, playing, hiking, knitting — whatever it is that you enjoy). If you enjoy something, there is a subset of the population who will as well. Recognize that those are your people, and engage with them — reply to their comments, follow their pages and show them and their business or personal accounts support. The more you engage with other pages, the more they will engage with you.

Exciting business updates are great, but remember to make it personal. Quotes and tips related to your industry can work wonders in reaching new people. Be sure to also use hashtags to get seen by people other than your existing followers.

Remember that business is personal. Focus on delivering value. Find out how your knowledge and experience can help your followers, and give it to them.
